In the Kromme Rijnstreek, the historic landscape of the Hollandse Waterlinie (part of the UNESCO World Heritage Hollandse Waterlinies) has been particularly well preserved and is still fully experienceable. These three cycle routes will give you a great view of the military heritage in Wijk bij Duurstede's backyard.

Be surprised by forts, trenches, dykes, locks, canals, casemates and group shelters. Together, these elements formed an ingenious system that used to protect the Netherlands from enemy troops. Flooding the land by about 50 centimetres made it impassable for soldiers and too shallow for boats. Will you cycle with us to discover this primal Dutch defence system from the 19th and 20th centuries?

This route follows the cycle junction network. Recognisable by the green and white signs with two numbers. The route starts at the Toeristisch Overstappunt (TOP): Wijk bij Duurstede's town harbour. Follow the nodes from here.

You can also choose to start the route at one of the other TOPs along the way.
