Waterline Museum Fort near Vechten

The Netherlands has a cool family museum: Waterliniemuseum Fort bij Vechten.
Visit the museum and explore the fort. This is where two World Heritage Sites cross, the Roman Limes and the Dutch Waterline. Both form a line through the landscape and both are an important part of the major defence lines in the Netherlands. Fort near Vechten is part of the New Dutch Waterline. An 85-kilometre defence line consisting of dykes, sluices, canals, group shelters and forts. During a visit to the Waterlinie Museum, you will be immersed in its genesis.

In the museum building, you will learn everything about the Waterlinie in an interactive voyage of discovery. People from different eras take you through their experiences. Prince Maurice tells you about the brilliant idea he had in 1589, a peasant woman takes you back to her personal life in the disaster year of 1672 and the soldier shows you the weak spots of the line in 1794. Engineer Kraijenhoff explains why the waterline was moved in 1815 and a workman lets you experience for yourself the harsh conditions he had to work under in 1880.

And if you still haven't had enough, you can fly over the Waterlinie inside the museum wearing virtual reality goggles and see what no one has ever seen before; the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie flooded!

From the Waterline Museum, several guided tours of Fort near Vechten and the nearby Castellum Fectio are offered. The guides will take you to hidden places and tell the story about the history of this location.

A children's exhibition is organised every summer.
