Inundation sluice Wijk bij Duurstede
In 1870, the Kromme Rijn received an important role in the New Dutch Waterline. The flooding of
the area around Utrecht then took almost a month; it had to be done faster. The river was widened, bends cut off and weirs and sluices built.
In Wijk bij Duurstede a large inundation sluice (inundation means flooding) was built. This made Wijk bij Duurstede the crane of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie. Now it only took 4 to 12 days to flood the inundation fields. Today, the inlet is still used daily to supply fresh water to the city of Utrecht and the Vecht.
