Fort Werk aan de Korte Uitweg

Near the river Lek, on the island of Schalkwijk, is Fort Werk aan de Korte Uitweg (WKU). There, where the kingfisher skims over the water, you can hear the grass rustle, you will find a teahouse and a nature campsite.

This fort was built between 1876-1879 as a support to Fort Honswijk. The work has a bombproof barracks, a storage shed and an ammunition depot.

Walkers, cyclists and canoeists
The fort has a nice terrace and teahouse, where coffee and tea can be enjoyed. Delicious lunches are also served. If you prefer a high tea, that too is possible. Employees of care organisation Reinaerde bake the most delicious cakes.

Walkers will enjoy the clog paths around the fort and various small detours are available. The area also offers beautiful cycling tours. Canoes can be rented at Fort WKU and you can also moor your own canoe. From the fort you can canoe to the lovely village of Schalkwijk and make a nice round trip through the polder and to other forts.

Nature campers
Always wanted to watch the sun set in a polder landscape? That too is possible, bring a tent and experience for yourself how beautiful this nature campsite is. Camping is possible between the fort ramparts and there is also a real fort hut for rent.

Room rental
There are two beautiful rooms for rent at the fort that have recently been redecorated. One large multifunctional room is suitable for larger groups. The other room is ideal for smaller groups.

Children
Children can play to their heart's content both outside and inside the Fort. There are special treasure hunts and children's parties can also be well organised. Pay close attention to the activities calendar, as forester Tineke regularly takes children out into nature.
