Along Lek and Linie
This cycle route lets you explore part of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie near Schalkwijk, Nieuwegein, Houten and Bunnik. In the Kromme Rijnstreek, the historical waterline landscape is particularly well preserved and preserved and can be experienced to the full.
The Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie is the largest national monument in the Netherlands, and together with the Stelling van Amsterdam, forms the UNESCO World Heritage Hollandse Waterlinies. The Dutch Waterlines protected the west of our country from the enemy by flooding wide strips of land to knee height. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of the unique and ingenious interplay of open landscape, a water management system with locks, canals and dykes, and military structures such as the forts.
