Wooden Houses, Stone Fortresses route
Discover the many different sturdy forts, wooden houses and other special Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie elements in and around Utrecht. For example, did you know that only wooden houses could be built within a one-kilometre radius of a fort? They did this so the houses could be burnt down in case of a threat of war and the 'field of fire' was again free for the soldiers. This so-called Kringenwet was in force until 1963. This is why eastern Utrecht has remained so beautifully green. Or did you know that a double circle of forts was built around Utrecht, because the east around the Dom city could not be flooded? And have you ever heard of a thud sluice? This is a sluice with dynamite in it, which could stop the flow of water to the city with an explosion. You will also come across this special object on the route, rare in the world!
