Fort Ruigenhoek
Location
On an uninhabited island with old, monumental trees, dense bushes and shortcuts lies Fort Ruigenhoek. This fort is owned by the Forestry Commission and is located in the green area with the Gagelbossen. Children can have a great time in the play forest and adults can take a guided tour. Part of the fort's moat is used as an outdoor swimming pool in summer. The fort is usually closed. However, there are regular guided tours, also on request. Fort Ruigenhoek is known to many as one of the locations for the annual Festival Tweetakt.

A piece of history
The large defensive structure on the Ruigenhoekse Dijk dates back to 1870 and was part of the second circle of forts around Utrecht. The fort had to close off possible enemy access via the Ruigenhoekse Dijk. The fort site consists of a large quadrangle of bastions with several structures. During the mobilisation period of World War I and on the eve of World War II, many concrete alterations were made: trenches, shelters, observation posts and machine gun emplacements.
