Walking around Slot Zeist
This walking route is a succession of forests, country houses and some delightful paths through farmland. The walking tour includes De Breul estate, with a beautiful English landscape garden, Heidestein estate, with a sheepfold, and of course Slot Zeist. The first resident of the castle was Willem van Nassau, lord of Odijk and grandson of Prince Maurits. After the castle, a leisurely walk through the estates of Wulperhorst and Blikkenberg. A forest walk through the old Zeisterbos, where there are even Scots pines dating back to 1795, is also part of this walk.
In short, a varied walking tour with lots to see and do. For instance, visit an exhibition at Slot Zeist or Museum Het Hernhutters. For children, there is Bezoekerscentrum De Boswerf, a beautiful, green location in the middle of the Zeisterbos, where children can have fun in the nature play forest.

Description
You can start this route in different ways.
- By car - then the route starts from TOP Zeist, Zinzendorflaan 1 in Zeist.
- By train - you can pick up the route from Driebergen-Zeist station. Then take exit Zeist and follow the directions from there.
- By bus - From Driebergen-Zeist station, take bus lines 50 and 71. From Utrecht Central station, bus line 50 or 51. Get off at Het Rond stop in Zeist.
The walking route is not signposted, but easy to follow using the route description below or by downloading the GPX route file.
Directions:
1 From the bridge in front of Slot Zeist, facing the entrance to the Slot, turn right across a bridge and immediately left, crossing an asphalt footpath along the moat. Keep to the path along the moat. At the end, cross a wooden bridge with white railings. After bridge, turn left, asphalt path along castle moat and back of Slot Zeist. At wooden bridge, continue straight on, following the path. At the end of the path, cross the road and turn right at an angle (Hernhuttersingel).
2 Immediately take the first road on the left, Filosofenlaantje. You will pass Playground and Restaurant Blik en Burgers 3 on your left. Walk down the lane and turn left onto Blikkenburgerlaan. Follow the bend and turn left again to continue along the avenue.
3 After the bridge, turn right through a swing gate to enter Schoonoord estate, grounds Utrechts Landschap. Follow the unpaved path along the canal straight ahead. At the end on asphalt road turn right. Take the first path left along metal gate, dogs not allowed. Follow this unpaved path to the end. End of path turn left, path along trees. You pass a fence via a metal walkway next to it. After fencing, turn right, semi-paved path. At a crossroads, turn left, tarmac road. You pass sports fields and follow the bend to the right. At the end, turn right, pavement next to the main road. At the traffic lights, turn left to cross the main road. (On the opposite side on the right you will find Pancake House Princenhof 4). L
4 Walk straight on for about 50 metres up Breullaan. Turn left up clinker path through metal swing gate, terrain Utrechts Landschap. Turn left at crossing of unpaved paths. The path curves around the front of De Breul country house. At the end of the path, turn left and cross the bridge. After the bridge, immediately turn right onto a dirt track. Walk to the end of the pond and at a Y-junction, with a bench on the right, keep left. Shortly after ignore a path to the right. Leave the estate through a metal gate and cross the main road with cycle tracks straight ahead. (For restaurants, you may wish to walk 450 m to the left; there you will come across Hotel Kerckebosch).
Straight ahead, forest path terrain Utrechts Landschap. Ignore the first path to the right and immediately afterwards turn right at the crossroads. Go straight ahead at the crossroads and immediately afterwards take the first path to the left. Follow this winding, narrow path straight on, ignoring side paths. At crossroads of forest paths go straight ahead. Turn right at the next crossroads. Cross an ATB path and turn left at the next crossing of paths, forest path with another path parallel to it. At a small crossroads go straight ahead and turn right at the next wide crossing. Follow the path straight ahead between wooden posts.
5 At an uneven intersection with a small building on the right, turn diagonally left towards Schaapskooi. At a three-way junction, continue straight ahead and then keep left towards the thatched pen. Keep left towards sheep pasture (sheep pasture is on your right). Past a bench, turn left, forest path. End of path turn right, wide forest path. Just before a wooden gate, turn left. Straight ahead pass a cycle fence. Cross the cycle path and immediately keep diagonally right, unpaved dirt track through semi-open terrain. You pass a pine-covered hill on your right. At a wide crossroads with a bench on your right, turn left. At a small crossroads go straight ahead, a narrow path into the forest. At double crossroads go straight ahead. Cross an ATB route and a bridleway and keep right. On your left you will see houses between the woods. At a crossroads go straight ahead.
6 At a junction of gravel paths at a small hill, turn right. The path bends left past a sports field. At a junction with a barrier on the left, go straight ahead, unpaved path. Ignore a bridleway diagonally to the right. On an open field go straight on and a little further on a wide Y-junction keep right past a bench. Follow the sandy path straight on towards an electricity box. At this box, continue straight ahead. At a junction with a gravel path and a parallel dirt track go straight ahead. Cross an ATB path and turn left at the next crossing towards a barrier by a traffic road. Cross the traffic road and go straight on, forest path terrain Utrechts Landschap. At crossroads go straight ahead. Follow the path straight on, ignore side paths and take the wider path straight on up a small hill. On the other side go down steeper and straight on. At clear junction go straight on and follow path, forest path between small hills to wooden bridge.
7 Turn left across the bridge and immediately right, path along dry canal. At the crossroads, continue straight on, path along canal. You pass a stone bench and a car park. Here you will also find the Deer Camp 12 on your right. Cross the asphalt road and continue straight on, continuing unpaved path along moat. At the pond on your right, continue straight ahead. Immediately afterwards at five/seven crossroads go straight on, you are still walking along a canal on your right. At white, hold- ten bridge straight on, the canal becomes a wider pond. Follow the path at the water's edge to the right and also at next white bridge straight on. Ignore side paths and turn left at the end, cross the tarmac road with cycle tracks. Go straight on, onto the Hoog Beek en Royen estate. At a junction of paths, continue straight ahead down the wide lane towards a white house.
8 Just before a barrier, turn sharp right, unpaved path. A little further on, turn left at a crossroads. At the end, turn right, leave the estate and cross the main road. Go straight ahead into Jufferstraat. You walk past a P-garage. At the end, turn left at the main road. At zebra crossing, turn right and continue left into the wide street past the town hall and Hotel Theater Figi 17 . Go straight ahead at the junction with 1st Dorpsstraat. Here you will find Restaurant De Hermitage on your right 15 . Past Schellinger's Garden, follow the gravel path straight ahead. Cross Lageweg and continue straight ahead towards the metal gate and Slot Zeist. You pass Museum Het Hernhuttershuis 13 and the Sisters' House on the right and the Broederhuis on the left.
