The Hernhutter House

In the Hernhutter Huis, you can learn all about the history of the Hernhutters, the Evangelical Brethren congregation that left its footprints and cultural heritage in Zeist.

What is there to see?
The Evangelical Brotherhood is a global church with an impressive faith and mission history. The museum depicts the history and life of the Hernhutters. In the main hall, you get a good idea of the history of the Evangelical Brethren Church. In the two smaller rooms, you get an insight into the special celebrations of the Hernhutters. There is also a film room, where you can watch various films about the Brotherhood.

A visit to the museum gives a unique glimpse into the past life of the Hernhutters in areas such as education, music and architecture and their missionary work. In the permanent exhibition, objects and utensils from past times are on display, including liturgical objects, hymnbooks, photos, prints and posters. But also archaeological finds, ranging from coins and pottery to pipe bowls and wine bottles, and objects related to missionary work.

Guided tours and heritage
On request, guided tours are organised for groups of interested people by volunteers, who tell not only about the history of the Brotherhood, but also about contemporary heritage. These tours include a walk around the squares, cemeteries and other places of interest. The special style of the buildings and the history of the Hernhutters capture the imagination. Who were the Hernhutters?
Originally from former Czechoslovakia, the adherents of this Brethren congregation were persecuted there, fled and built the settlement Hernhut in Germany, which grew into the Evangelical Brethren Church. From Hernhut, Brethren congregations were founded in various places in Europe, including in the gardens of Slot Zeist (1745). This is where the Brother and Sister Square and the church building from 1768, which still stands today, came into being. The Hernhutters spread all over the world, but did missionary work especially in Suriname.

Museum Stichting Het Hernhutter Huis was founded in 2007 by the Brethren congregation and the Zeister Zendingsgenootschap.

A visit to Museum Het Hernhutter Huis also means a visit to the museum shop, where you can buy original 'Hernhuter' stars. If you only visit the museum shop, you don't have to pay an entrance fee.
