The miracle of Amersfoort - An ancient legend

The Miracle of Amersfoort is one of the best-known medieval stories from the province of Utrecht. In the 15th century, a small statue of Mary was found in Amersfoort, which soon became known for miraculous healings. The statue, which became known as Our Lady of Amersfoort, attracted thousands of pilgrims to the city.

In a short time, Amersfoort grew into an important place of pilgrimage in the Middle Ages. Pilgrims travelled from all over the Netherlands and abroad to the historic city centre to venerate the statue and find hope and solace.
