Museum Spakenburg | Utrecht Region
Step into the world of fishermen and craftsmanship
On the picturesque old harbour of Spakenburg, you’ll find Museum Spakenburg – the place where life around the former Zuiderzee truly comes to life. Discover the rich history of fishing, shipbuilding, traditional dress and rural life in this region. A visit to this museum is a journey through time and a tribute to Dutch craftsmanship at its finest.
From botters to blockmakers
Around 1900, more than two hundred botters (traditional wooden fishing boats) set sail from Spakenburg to fish the Zuiderzee. This busy harbour life gave rise to all kinds of crafts: shipyards, smokehouses, rope-making and wooden block carving. Museum Spakenburg brings these trades back to life through permanent exhibitions and interactive displays for both young and old.
