Cycling, history and regal dining

Some days, you just need space, nature and a touch of luxury. On the Utrechtse Heuvelrug, you can cycle through the greenery in a day, discover stories between old walls and enjoy the best of the region’s cuisine. This route introduces you to Parc Broekhuizen, Fort aan de Buursteeg and Kasteel Duurstede, places where history, nature and good food come together.

Your day will start at Parc Broekhuizen, a historic estate in the middle of the woods near Leersum. As soon as you cycle or drive down the driveway, it will feel like you have entered another world. The grandeur of the mansion, the tranquillity of the surrounding park and the pond with reed beds immediately create a special atmosphere.

Tip: Start your morning with a walk through Parc Broekhuizen's park. The views are best here when the sun is just rising and the grass is still wet with morning dew.

Once you get back on your bike, the route will take you past small villages, along quiet roads and past the historic Fort aan de Buursteeg near Renswoude. This old defensive structure, part of the Grebbe Line, is hidden among greenery and tells stories of soldiers, water and strategic thinking. You can visit the fort itself, wander around for a while and enjoy the vast nature all around.

Tip: Take time at Fort aan de Buursteeg for a short break. At the visitor centre, you can learn more about the Grebbe Line and life at the fort.

For lunch, settle down at the Grebbelounge, a welcoming restaurant right on the water and overlooking the Grebbe Line. Here you can choose from homemade soups, richly filled sandwiches and fresh salads. Everything is prepared with attention and as much local produce as possible. Whether you’re seated outside on the terrace or sitting cosily inside by the window, the view of the countryside and the rippling water will make your lunch extra special.

After lunch, you will cycle along rural roads to Castle Duurstede. This castle is one of the oldest in the Netherlands and still exudes the atmosphere of knights, water and stories.

Tip: Stroll around the park surrounding Castle Duurstede and discover the most beautiful views of the castle and the moat.

Want to end your day in a special way? Cycle back to Parc Broekhuizen and indulge in a dinner that stimulates all the senses. Here, everything is about high-level gastronomy: from a creative and star-worthy seasonal menu at restaurant Voltaire to relaxed dining at Bistro LOF. Spend the night in style, with views of the estate and a breakfast to dream of.

Tip: Book a table at Voltaire for a star-worthy evening out. Each of the dishes is an ode to the region.

After a day of cycling fun, castles and culinary highlights, you will sleep like royalty on the estate of Parc Broekhuizen, highly recommended!
