Would you like to cycle along a beautiful route through varied nature and see something of Dutch history? You can, with the cycling route Grebbelinie midden!
The Grebbelinie dates back to the 18th century, and was designed to defend the Netherlands against an invasion by enemies. On this route, you can clearly see the history of this line, such as at the starting point, Fort aan de Buursteeg. Water was important in the Grebbelinie, which is why you cycle along local waterways like the Grift, the Lunterse Beek and the Valleikanaal from the very beginning. Right along the Valleikanaal between Woudenberg and Scherpenzeel, the Grebbelinie in 't Vizier Foundation has set up an old farmer's barn as an exhibition space, which is well worth a stop. Further north along the Valleikanaal canal, at Langesteeg you pass a German bunker that was used to stop the advancing Allies. You can learn more about it in this 'Museum bunker'.
Near junction 64 near Leusden, you will find the 2500-metre-long Asschatterkeerkade. This retaining embankment dates back to 1745 and is one of the longest of the entire Grebbelinie. Via the outskirts of Leusden, you follow the route in a southerly direction cycling through Scherpenzeel Estate, after which you cross the provincial border and end up in the village centre of Scherpenzeel in Gelderland. An excellent place for a coffee break!
As you cycle out of Scherpenzeel, you re-enter the province of Utrecht and turn off the main road towards Werk aan de Daatselaar, where you can still clearly see the edge of the old fort, including water surrounding it. Then you head towards Renswoude and cycle straight towards the beautiful old Castle Renswoude, hidden between the trees. After the castle, it's another short stretch along beautifully wooded lanes to return to the Grebbelinie Visitor Centre.

Description
The route follows the nodes on the white-green signs of the cycle route network. A convenient place to start the route is at one of the Toerist Transfer Points (TOPs), such as TOP Fort aan de Buursteeg near Renswoude/Veenendaal, or TOP Theehuis Monchuette and Toerist Transfer Point Hoeve Groot Zandbrink near Leusden. The description on this website starts from TOP Fort aan de Buursteeg, where the Grebbellinie Visitor Centre is also situated.
