Haarzuilensroute
The Haarzuilens route is a cycling tour through peatland with elongated plots, open meadows, reedlands and planted kaden and dykes. A cycle route that shows not only the struggle against water (quays and mills), but also memories of the battle between the bishops of Utrecht and counts of Holland. For example, the hamlet of Putkop is named after a defensive structure. Around Vleuten, remnants of several castles can still be found. Castle De Haar rose on the ruins of 'Huys Ter Haer' in the late 19th century. This beautiful castle in Haarzuilens with its park and gardens is well worth a visit.
The Vijverbosch nature reserve in Harmelen was formed around old tichel holes, clay excavations for the brick and roof tile industry. These holes have not been filled in the Vijverbosch, creating a unique paradise for water birds.
