Oortjespad is named after the road of the same name that used to be an old toll road (an oort is an old Dutch coin, worth 1/4 stuiver). This road was also a church path until the 19th century, leading to the Roman Catholic shelter church in Teckop. A work of art at the fishpond Duck still refers to this today. On the Oortjespad is a petting zoo with various animals, including squirrels, ponies and various species of birds. In spring, a pair of storks often nest on the stork's nest. You can also cuddle small animals such as rabbits, guinea pigs and goats. There is also a Pitch&Putt Golf course and restaurants with terraces by the water. Oortjespad is an excellent starting point for a cycling or walking tour. Marked routes take you among others along medieval canals, polders, peat meadows and characteristic villages such as Kamerik.

For children
This TOP is ideally located for a short walk with children, or even an adventure on the 3 km long barefoot path that starts here. Present facilities such as a paddling pool, petting zoo and catering facilities (ice cream), we kids are bound to like as well. Currently (winter/spring 2026), a new family restaurant is being built that will include a straw castle. It is expected to open in mid-2026.

Until the 19th century, this road was also a church path leading to the Roman Catholic clandestine church in Teckop. A sculpture in the Eend fishing lake still refers to this today. As well as a petting farm with a watchtower and sunbathing and play areas, there is a visitor centre. There is also a Pitch & Putt golf course and restaurants with terraces by the water. Oortjespad is an excellent starting point for a cycling or walking tour. Marked routes take you past, amongst other things, medieval drainage canals, polders, peat meadows and characteristic villages such as Kamerik.
A few tips
De Haar Castle
De Haar Castle is the largest and most luxurious castle in the Netherlands. Visit the castle with an expert guide or take a brisk walk through the extensive English-style landscape park and discover special spots with the audio tour. Address: Kasteellaan 1, Haarzuilens. Park opening hours: Mon–Sun 9.00–17.00.
Nieuwkoopse Plassen
The area around the Nieuwkoopse Plassen is ideal for cycling and walking. This unique nature reserve is a true oasis of peace and space for plants, animals and people alike. There is plenty to see and do on and around the water, such as flower-filled hay meadows and vast reed beds. What’s more, the Nieuwkoopse Plassen are renowned for their abundance of birds, including the purple heron.
Oortjespad Visitor Centre
Information about the ‘De Venen’ area can be found at the Oortjespad Visitor Centre, right next to the TOP. There’s plenty for children to do and discover. The permanent exhibition answers questions such as which animals live in the ditch and which meadow birds you can hear. Next to the visitor centre is a petting farm.
Woerden City Museum
The Woerden City Museum is housed in Woerden’s former town hall. It is a small-scale, atmospheric museum with an interesting collection. Here you will find, amongst other things, landscapes from the ‘Groene Hart’ by the Hague School and works by important artists from Woerden. Address: Kerkplein 6, Woerden. Opening hours: Wed and Sat 10.00–17.00, Tue, Thu, Fri and Sun 13.00–17.00.
