In the Kromme Rijnstreek, the historic landscape of the Hollandse Waterlinie (part of the UNESCO World Heritage Hollandse Waterlinies) has been particularly well preserved and is still fully experienceable. These three cycle routes will give you a great view of the military heritage in Wijk bij Duurstede's backyard.

Be surprised by forts, trenches, dykes, locks, canals, casemates and group shelters. Together, these elements formed an ingenious system that used to protect the Netherlands from enemy troops. Flooding the land by about 50 centimetres made it impassable for soldiers and too shallow for boats.
