Fort Werk IV
Hidden in a residential area in the middle of Bussum, you will find the unique Fort Werk IV. For centuries, the Dutch Waterline protected the west of our country from enemy attack. Around 1870, a line of five forts was constructed 2.5 km in front of the Naarden fortress. This became part of the New Dutch Waterline. Fort Werk IV, built on the highest point of the Bussumer Eng, is the last remaining of the five original works.
Fort Werk IV has a 'dry moat' containing a wall with loopholes as a physical barrier. This wall is unique for the Netherlands and one of the main reasons why the fort is a National Monument. Fort Werk IV has been restored to its former glory and is managed by the Fort Werk IV Foundation.
