Around the year 1276, the wealthy Zoudenbalch family commissioned the construction of a city castle along the Oudegracht canal. A unique building project, because at the time only the wealthiest inhabitants could afford a stone building: almost all houses, including those of the wealthier inhabitants, consisted of wood and loam and were covered with thatched roofs. History
Around the year 1276, the wealthy Zoudenbalch family commissioned the construction of a city castle along the Oudegracht canal. A unique building project, because at the time only the wealthiest inhabitants could afford a stone building: almost all houses, including those of the wealthier inhabitants, consisted of wood and loam and were covered with thatched roofs. The result was a stately city castle that is still a real eye-catcher today.
In 1395, the building came into the possession of the Oudaen family, from the mid-18th century it was in use as an old people's home for over two hundred years, and then it was briefly owned by a student association. Since 1986, the monumental building has been in use as a catering establishment with a grand café, à la carte restaurant, its own brewery and several meeting rooms.

On the ground floor - which once housed the former knights' hall and, in later years, the dining room for the elderly - dining and drinking are once again taking place. The rooms on the first floor have been merged for the restaurant and the castle's vaults house the brewery. As in the Middle Ages, when the wharf was home to dozens of breweries, several of its own beers are brewed here.
