Grebbelinie

A line to experience

From the Eighty Years' War to World War II, this line served to protect much of the Netherlands. The first plans for the Grebbelinie date back to the Eighty Years' War. The low position of Gelderse Valley between the Veluwe and the Utrechtse Heuvelrug made the area suitable for designing a water line here. A year after the Republic of the Seven United Provinces was proclaimed in 1588, the first entrenchment was already constructed in Woudenberg. This makes it one of the oldest water lines in the Netherlands. The Grebbelinie is distinguished from other lines by the prominent role it was often given at times when the survival of our country as an independent state was at stake. In 1945, the Grebbelinie formed the boundary between war and peace, when the liberators stopped at the line.
