The Grebbeberg lies on the outskirts of Rhenen and forms the south-eastern part of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug. From the moraine, you can look out over the Lower Rhine, the floodplains and the Gelderse Vallei. The area consists of ancient woodlands, varied terrain and walking routes that take you past remarkable natural and historical sites. Thanks to its combination of landscape, views and cultural history, the Grebbeberg is a popular destination for walkers and nature lovers.
The Grebbeberg is not only a unique nature reserve, but also plays an important role in Dutch history. During the Battle of the Grebbeberg in May 1940, fierce fighting took place here at the start of the Second World War. Various monuments, the Grebbeberg Military Cemetery and parts of the former defences still serve as reminders of this. At the same time, the area forms part of a much older landscape that was formed during the Ice Age and was later developed with walking trails, woodlands and viewing points.
The Grebbeberg is a fine example of how nature and heritage are intertwined on the Utrechtse Heuvelrug . Here, you can walk through a varied landscape where history is visibly present, whilst enjoying views of the Lower Rhine and the Gelderse Vallei along the way.
