De Stijl between Utrecht and Amersfoort: In search of Rietveld and Mondriaan
The Stijl cycle route between Utrecht and Amersfoort shows which traces of De Stijl can be found in the region. From the museum around painter Piet Mondriaan, born in Amersfoort, to the numerous creations of furniture designer and architect Gerrit Rietveld, born in Utrecht. Salient detail: Rietveld and Mondriaan never met.
The route starts at Slot Zuylen, one of the oldest castles along river Vecht. Rietveld designed a table and three chairs for the castle's gatehouse. You then cycle through the inner city of Utrecht past the Centraal Museum, cemetery Soesterbergen, with Rietveld's tomb and the Rietveld-Schöderhuis, among others. After Utrecht, you cycle via Bunnik, Zeist, Huis ter Heide and Soesterberg to Amersfoort. You will pass the Soesterberg Air Base Park, among other places. The Style Route between Utrecht and Amersfoort is a single route, but signposted both ways. Those who still want to cycle a lap can return via the express cycle route between the two cities. This route is rigged with 6-metre-high sculptures by Boris van Tellingen, who was inspired by De Stijl for these sculptures.
