Romans along the Kromme Rijn

4 hours (56.5 km)

Cycling along the Kromme Rijn

Utrecht was built on the remains of a Roman fort. You can view the foundations under the Domplein square. Just outside the city is the mighty castellum Fectio, the largest border fort along the limes, whose foundations have been made visible again. From here, you cycle through a green river landscape to Wijk bij Duurstede, with the Kromme Rijn river as your thread.

This route is provided by ANWB. More information and a detailed route description can be found on the ANWB website: Romans along the Kromme Rijn.

Shorten route: you can shorten the route to 41.5 km if you wish. To do so, cycle from node 55 to 53. You then skip the loop to Wijk bij Duurstede.

Extend route: you can extend the route with a loop to the Dom tower in Utrecht. The length then becomes 59.2 km. The extension is described in the text on anwb.nl.
