Around Woerden and environs

This varied cycle route takes you through the heart of the Netherlands, where the Green Heart reveals its historical secrets. You start in Woerden, a fortified town with a special story. In 1576, during the siege by the Spaniards, famine threatened. But thanks to a miracle - big fish swimming into the town via the Oude Rijn river - the population was saved. This 'Miracle of Woerden' is the starting point of a route full of fascinating history.

Via rural Kamerik, you cycle towards Harmelen, which was voted the nicest village in Utrecht by 3FM listeners in 2013. Here you taste the village cosiness and the charm of the Green Heart. You then reach Montfoort, once the mighty domain of the Lords of Montfoort. Their struggle with the Bishop of Utrecht marked the town for centuries. The last viscount had to sell his rights in 1648 due to debts, ending an era.

The route ends in Oudewater, a city with an impressive past. In 1572, Oudewater took part in the First Free States Assembly, a courageous step towards independence. It was harshly punished: the Spanish army committed a massacre, known as the Oudewater Massacre.
