Around Vianen's city centre, large parts of the medieval defences can still be seen: the city moat, the city walls and the Lekpoort. The Lekpoort is the only gate preserved after parts of the city wall and gates were demolished in the 19th century, as they were considered an obstacle to increasing wrong.
The Lekpoort dates back to the 15th century. The turret originally housed a prison.
