Ameide is in all probability the oldest settlement in the Alblasserwaard, making it one of the oldest towns in Holland. Thanks to its history as a town, Ameide has relatively many monuments, such as the town hall from 1644. The town hall - together with the reformed church from 1361 - was the only one to survive the arson attack by the French in 1672, thanks to negotiation by the local vicar at the time.
The city hall also used to serve as a weigh house and prison. Today, it is used by the Historical Society of Ameide and Tienhoven and is also a popular wedding location.

The church tower houses an 1100 kg clock dating from 1608. In 1943, the bell was thrown out of the tower by the German occupiers to be melted down into weaponry. Along with many other bells, it was supposed to go to Germany by ship, but the ship was sunk by the underground resistance. After the war, the bells were returned to where they belonged. So was the one from Ameide. In 1953, the bell fell down again in the church fire. In 2015, the bell was restored and the damage from 1943 and 1953 repaired. The bell rings every half hour and also rings before the start of church services, at funerals and at New Year.
