The beautiful forests near Soest
Between Soest, Bilthoven and Baarn, you can enjoy cycling through the foothills of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug. Here you will find vast forests, but also stately country estates and villas. You can also cycle a few kilometres along the former Grebbelinie.
Much of the route takes you through the Laagte van Pijnenburg, a lower part of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug. The soil here is moister and richer than on the higher parts of the ridge, so there is more natural variation. What makes this area extra special is the almost un-Dutch silence. Between Soest and Amersfoort, you drive through a drier forest, where you mainly find conifers.

On and around the Utrechtse Heuvelrug , many stately country houses have been built over the centuries. Like Pijnenburg, a white plastered country house from the 17th century. Across the road you can see Staalwijk, a stately cross-house farmhouse from 1834. Prins Hendriksoord is a country house from the nineteenth century. You'll also pass Soestdijk Palace, a landmark you can honour with a visit if the palace is open. After cycling, you can refuel at leisure on the cosy terrace of Cafetaria De Spoorhut.
Between junctions 87 and 82, you cycle a few kilometres on the Grebbeliniedijk along the banks of the Eem. This small river has a length of 18 kilometres and is one of the few rivers that begins and ends on Dutch territory. The Grebbeliedijk you drive over has been restored in recent years. This has made another piece of the culturally and historically important Grebbelinie visible. And that, of course, makes your cycle tour extra special.
