Although Schoonhoven is of course best known as National Silver City, there is much more to discover in and around the Old Dutch town in the Green Heart of the Netherlands. Like during these three special Molenroutes through Krimpener-, Lopiker- and Alblasserwaard, where you will discover the unique polder landscape of Zuid-Holland, with over two hundred mills the most mill-rich province in the world.

By bike, on foot or by car, discover the windmills that once drained the land and produced flour, enjoy countless beautiful panoramas or visit one of the many craft businesses along the route where you can still taste the real Gouda cheese, for example. Or visit the windmills of World Heritage Site Kinderdijk, the fortress of Nieuwpoort and witch town Oudewater, sail the Lek river 'Occasionally' if you are lucky, rent a canoe or settle down at one of the hospitable terraces along the way for a drink, meal or to spend the night and continue your route rested the next day.

Your Molenroute starts and ends at the place where the Lopiker-, Krimpen- and Alblasserwaard rivers intersect: in Schoonhoven. Strategically located on the river, the 'Creative Silver City on the Lek' has been a popular tourist destination for centuries thanks to its rich cultural history.

Spinning and illuminated windmills

In July and August, the Kinderdijk windmills turn every Saturday, and in early September the windmills are illuminated at night. An extra reason to discover the windmills and stay for dinner, drinks and accommodation in and around Schoonhoven!
