Fortified town of Montfoort

Montfoort is strategically located on the Hollandsche IJssel, in the border area of Holland and Utrecht. The castle - from the 12th century - had to protect the Utrecht Sticht from attacks by the counts of Holland. Although the town was walled, it would not be part of the Old Dutch Waterline. However, Montfoort did play a role in the Disaster Year 1672. During the attack on the Republic, Montfoort was occupied by French troops. In the process, the castle was blown up. Only the old gatehouse and an octagonal tower were spared.
