Century-old building
The City Museum is housed in the Oude Raadhuis - the city's most beautiful monument. A beautiful, large medieval building, close to the famous Cunerakerk and overlooking the Rhine. For centuries, the city council and the court housed here. You can still see that.
On your journey through the high spaces, you will discover Rhenen as a city of treasures, struggles and beauty. A place also connected to major historical events and (inter)national networks. This has everything to do with Rhenen's location, between the high ridge and the river.

Treasures
You can enjoy archaeological masterpieces in the museum, which the Rhenen soil gave away - including impressive gold treasures and archaeological objects. Weapons, eating utensils, jewellery with precious stones from even India. Reminders of Neanderthals and mammoths. But you will also see numerous objects that highlight Rhenen as a popular medieval pilgrimage site. Like a rare oak statue of Cunera, from 1500, and fragile pilgrims' badges. They were once made by the thousands to commemorate Saint Cunera, who was worshipped in Rhenen.
Battle room
Here you stand face to face with Rhenen in turbulent times. Many battles were fought in and around Rhenen. A Viking sword found in the Rhine is a reminder of this. But also a painting showing Gelderlander troops attacking the walled city. Soldiers' helmets, found in the old city canal, refer to the battle with the Spaniards. And of course there is a focus on the Grebbelinie and W.W. II. You see images of civilians, in the midst of a city in ruins. And of Ouwehands Dierenpark, occupied by the grim German soldiers. Movies tell the story penetratingly.
Beauty
Rhenen, how beautiful you are! Artists have been touched by Rhenen's beauty for centuries. Rembrandt was one of them. The wide vistas, the ridge and the little town by the river, they continue to fascinate. Look forward to a fine collection of paintings and prints, showing you the town and its surroundings then and now. Movies and photos, and a virtual route through Rhenen add to the variety of the presentation.
Exhibitions and Museumcafé
Besides the permanent presentation, the museum offers a programme of exhibitions and activities. In the beautiful museum café, you can enjoy a delicious coffee with sweets, lunch or a nice glass. Weddings are also possible at Stadsmuseum Rhenen, meetings or celebrations too.
VVV information point
Stadsmuseum Rhenen is also a VVV information point. You can go here for up-to-date leaflets of the region and for cycling and walking routes. Enquire at Stadsmuseum Rhenen or the local VVV for the availability of VVV gift cards.
