Playground Kloosterplantsoen

Children with and without disabilities can enjoy playing in this special monastery playground in the centre of IJsselstein. The contours of the old monastery have been made visible with ruined walls and arches devised by children. A storytelling monk tells the story of the Middle Ages. Children can hang among the trees in the tree trail. Get dirty in the sandpit. Dream away in the bird's nest swing. See themselves transformed in the laughing mirrors.

Playing in historic surroundings
At the entrance to the playground, monk Nicholaus keeps watch. Why is he standing there? That has everything to do with the history of the Kloosterplantsoen ...

In the Middle Ages, a Cistercian monastery stood in the Kloosterplantsoen. At that time, there was a lot of fighting between the Counts of Holland and the Bishop of Utrecht. IJsselstein was right in between. The monastery was occupied and the city centre was shelled. That was not the intention. In 1482, the monastery was demolished and rebuilt in the inner city: Mariënberg (now Brasserie de Kloostertuin).

This unique playground is located next to the remains of an old monastery to which numerous elements refer. Through special activities, children are introduced to the historical character of this place.

Meeting place
The playground is intended as a meeting place between children (with and without disabilities) and adults and between adults themselves. This place offers room for social involvement in the sense of actively helping out.

Daily play
The playground is open all day every day and free of charge.

Gnome trail and activities
Especially for curious sleuths, a treasure hunt has been created along a number of gnome doors in the city centre. Find the red doors in shop windows and answer fun questions along the way. Pick up a treasure hunt at the pavilion (during opening hours).

Regularly, there are also other gnome activities in the playground. Keep an eye on the calendar.

The pavilion "De Monnik"
From mid-April until the end of October, De Monnik is open in the afternoon from 13.00 to 17.00 (depending on volunteer availability and weather conditions). Outside these opening hours, it is possible, for a small fee, to make arrangements for different opening hours.
