This unique mill built on a city gate (Leuterpoort) is also wrongly called "Ruysdael's mill" and therefore enjoys great fame.
However, the mill in Ruysdael's painting is a tower mill slightly west against the city wall in Wijk bij Duurstede, whose foundations can still be found in Langs de Wal, opposite house no 53.
The corn mill "Rijn en Lek" was originally built around 1648 as a run mill. Run is finely ground oak bark used as a raw material in the process of tanning leather.

For a long time, the mill has been set up as a corn mill with two pairs of grinding stones.
In 1924, the "Rijn en Lek" was up for sale and the demolition of this unique shore gate mill was threatened. A local committee opposed this and in 1929 enabled the then young "De Hollandse Molen" association in Amsterdam to buy the mill and gate. In 1934, the first restoration was commissioned by the Association. On 6 September 1944, the mill struck during a heavy storm and sustained heavy damage to the king spindle and the upper wheel, among others, when attempts were made to bring it to a halt. In 1959, a storm broke a rod, which was repaired in 1960. Further restorations followed in 1964, 1980/1981, 1995 and 1997/1998.
Since 1972, volunteer millers have operated the mill.
