The origins of Landgoed Bredius date back to 1824. In that year, Jacobus Bredius, notary and mayor of Woerden, bought several plots of land from brick manufacturers just outside the city walls. At the time, the Oude Rijn river basin was abundant in clay extraction for the roof tile industry.

The origins of Landgoed Bredius date back to 1824. In that year, Jacobus Bredius, notary and mayor of Woerden, bought several plots of land from brick manufacturers just outside the city walls. At the time, the Oude Rijn river basin was abundant in clay extraction for the roof tile industry.
By 2011, the estate had lost much of its former splendour. To be a pleasant place for citizens and visitors, and to preserve the valuable landscape, cultural-historical and natural elements, restoration and better maintenance were needed. Foundation Landgoed Bredius originated from a citizens' initiative group, consisting of 14 organisations and citizens closely involved with the estate. In 2012, this initiative group, supported by the Royal Dutch Heath Society (KNHM) and Arcadis, drafted a spatial vision: "Paradise in the City", a vision for restoration and sustainable management of the estate.
Landgoed Bredius is actually called Landgoed Batestein, after the homestead. The municipality has called it Park Bredius since 1970. The name Landgoed Bredius reflects the special and valuable character of the area.
