French and Dutch 19th century painting
Museum Gouda has a wonderful collection of 19th and early 20th century Dutch and French painting (Hague School and Barbizon School). Artists such as Bonvin, Daubigny, Vollon, Tholen, Weissenbruch and Israëls painted their impressions of the landscape. With their quick, sketchy painting style, they are the forerunners of modern painting. Besides these famous landscape painters, the collection includes works by painters of the Amsterdam School, the movement of Tachtigers and symbolists such as Redon and Degouve de Nuncques.
Historic building
Museum Gouda is located in the former Catharina Hospital. You walk straight into the Middle Ages! The history of the monumental building dates back to the 14th century. The building served as a hospice until the 20th century. Since 1947, Museum Gouda has been exhibiting Gouda's treasures there.
