Step into the world of Vikings, traders and craftsmen. At Museum Dorestad, the early Middle Ages come to life! The museum tells the story of Dorestad, once a bustling trading centre on the Rhine and one of the most important places in north-western Europe.

Here’s what you can experience at Museum Dorestad
In the attic, Katla’s ship awaits: a replica of a Scandinavian cargo ship which you can step aboard. Through an animation, you’ll experience the final leg of her journey, travelling twelve centuries back in time. Downstairs, in the Dorestad Hall, you can admire archaeological finds that bring daily life, trade and cultural encounters to life.

In the scale craft house, you will meet residents who will tell you about their work and tools: from axes and spinning wheels to flutes and pottery. So you can see what life was really like in Dorestad. The highlight is the large model of the town, with warehouses, dams and ships on the river, a beautiful panorama that brings the past closer than ever.

Museum Dorestad is a place where archaeology, history and imagination come together. Fun for families, history buffs and curious explorers. Be transported to a time full of trade, adventure and stories by the river.
