All Steam Pumping Station Days In the middle of the Arkemheen polder lies a unique monument, the Hertog Reijnout steam pumping station. This steam pumping station was in operation for 100 years, from 1883 to 1983. Then its function was taken over by an electric pumping station that now grinds excess water from the polder. In 1985, the steam pumping station was restored, preserving this cultural-historical monument for the future. Stoomgemaal Hertog Reijnout is the only working pumping station with two outside paddlewheels. The steam pumping station can be visited from Tuesday to Saturday. About 12 days a year (during the so-called Meal Days) it is open to the public in operation, i.e. under steam.

Visitor Centre Arkemheen is located in the old coal shed of the steam pumping station. The visitor centre provides information on the unique values and interests of the Arkemheen polder. More information about the Arkemheen Visitor Centre can be found at www.stoomgemaal-arkemheen.nl...
