Defence island with VR pole
Between the castle and the city canal lies the Defence Island, which was created in the 19th century. After the dismantling of the city walls in 1880, new workshops were built here by the Ministry of War. For example, a laundry with boiler house and clothing warehouses were built. The site was bought up by the municipality in 2005. With a few exceptions, all buildings were subsequently demolished and, after extensive soil remediation, replaced by new buildings. Some buildings including the steam laundry with chimney have been retained and will be given a catering and recreational function.
On the Defence Island in Woerden, you can now place your own phone against a virtual reality pole, and watch the French soldiers walk through the town in 1672.
