Grote Kerk Wijk bij Duurstede

The church is dedicated to John the Baptist. Construction of a smaller church had already begun in the early 14th century. Bishop David of Burgundy (1456-1496) expanded the church into a three-aisled cruciform church. In 1486, construction of the blunt tower began. In 1579, the choir burned down and was not rebuilt. The east facade was then bricked up. After the transition of the church in 1581 from Roman Catholic to Protestant rule, the east facade was given the "ten precepts" in 1593. The organ, which rests on a 15th-century organ stand, dates largely from the 17th century. The church and organ were thoroughly restored in the years 1968-1982.
