Castellum Hoge Woerd, located in Leidsche Rijn, is a reconstructed Roman fort. Behind its high walls are an archaeological museum, a theatre, an educational centre for nature and environmental education and a café-restaurant.
History
In 1997, during the construction of the Leidsche Rijn district, the entire infrastructure of the Roman frontier was found by chance one day: the border road, the river and a ship. A major investigation followed, and more and more utensils and other remains from the Roman period were uncovered. This provided important new insights into the functioning of the Roman Limes in our country.

History
In 1997, during the construction of the Leidsche Rijn district, the entire infrastructure of the Roman frontier was found by chance one day: the border road, the river and a ship. A major investigation followed, and more and more utensils and other remains from the Roman period were uncovered. This provided important new insights into the functioning of the Roman Limes in our country.
In 2007, it was decided to present all these finds in a cultural park: the current Castellum Hoge Woerd. A modern fortress with six-metre-high ramparts now stands on the spot where Romans once guarded the river. Archaeological treasures usually remain hidden below ground level, but here they become tangible and experienceable in a tantalising way.
Podium
The theatre hall at Castellum Hoge Woerd has room for 229 guests. It hosts an average of three performances a week: from cabaret and cabaret, to family and youth performances, (music) theatre and dance.
CastellumCafé
The CastellumCafé is open daily from 10.00 am for coffee and cake, lunch and dinner. Cooking is done with organic and local products as much as possible. Because of its Roman history, the menu is inspired by Italian cuisine.
Museum
At the museum you will learn all about Utrecht's Roman history. The showpiece of the collection is the Roman ship De Meern I. The barge dates from 150 AD and had to be preserved for 12 years before it could be exhibited. In the museum, visitors can look around and on top of the ship.
Opening hours
Castellum Hoge Woerd is open daily from 10am to 5pm. CastellumCafé is also open daily from 10 am for coffee, lunch and dinner. The kitchen closes at 10 pm.
Entry to the site and museum is free.
