Louis Hartlooper Complex
Utrecht is a real film city, and it is bursting with cinemas with a special story. The Louis Hartlooper Complex, located in the Museum Quarter, is no exception. This is where films, festivals, catering and events come together.

Old police station
The film house is located in a monumental building in the centre of Utrecht, built in 1928 as a police station. It is virtually the only building in Utrecht that refers to the Amsterdam School in terms of architectural style, and was therefore officially listed as a national monument in 2001.
In the year 1999, the building became vacant and a new (cultural) destination had to be found. Two years later, the municipality decided that the plans for the Louis Hartlooper Complex could go ahead. While respecting its historical significance, the monumental building was converted into the film theatre as we know it today. The striking exterior remained unchanged, but many special details were also preserved on the inside.
Cinema and restaurant
The Louis Hartlooper Complex has been an integral part of Utrecht ever since. It has four cinemas where mainly arthouse films are screened, and in its first year already the cinema was crowned best cinema in the Netherlands. The complex also comprises a café and restaurant where you can enjoy a cup of coffee, pastry, lunch, drinks or dinner before or after the film. The sunny terrace is also a must! Cooking is done exclusively with 100% organic meat and honest ingredients, and the focus is also on working with seasonal and local produce.
