Fort Maarsseveen

Fort Maarsseveen (officially: 'Werk bij Maarsseveen') is located in the Vechtplassen area between Utrecht and Maarssen. It was built in 1880-1881 to close the access across the Maarsseveen canal and had an occupation of 80 troops. It is one of the last forts of the New Dutch Waterline, and part of UNESCO World Heritage Hollandse Waterlinies. Only the bombproof building remains of the original work; the earthen ramparts and wooden outbuilding have disappeared over the years.

Cultural breeding ground
Fort Maarsseveen is a cultural and artistic breeding ground and meeting place. During your cycling or walking tour, make a stop here especially to see the fort. Ceramists, sculptors and also the annually changing artist in residence of the HKU have their own studios here. Every last Sunday of the month, the FORT ZON DAG features music, a guided tour, a children's treasure hunt, and a new exhibition by a local or regional artist.

Information point
In "The Kruitkamer" you will find the Waterlinie info point. And the café houses a small-scale VVV information point with leaflets on the Waterlinie and the Vechtstreek.

Horeca
The terrace in front of the café is a well-kept secret; even early in the year you can sit there and enjoy the wind. On weekdays, Fort watchmen keep the fort open. They provide coffee, a drink,
soup or a sandwich, and tell visitors about the water line, the exhibition and the fort's other activities. Every weekend the kitchen of Pop up Paella is open with an extensive lunch and
tapas menu.

Groups & reservations
And by reservation, groups can visit any day and time, both for meetings and parties. Fort Maarsseveen is also a wedding location.
