Beautifully hidden in a bend of the river Vecht is Fort Uitermeer. Here lie the stories of the genesis of the Vecht valley, the clean water of the Vechtplassen, the Dutch Waterways and Natuurmonumenten's struggle to preserve nature in these times of encroaching urbanisation.
Fort Uitermeer has a long history; there must have been an entrenchment named Uitermeer here before 1589. Later, an earthen fort was built and still later the shellproof tower fort.
The fort protected the lock, the 's-Gravelandse Vaart, roads and railway. Fort Uitermeer is part of the Old and New Dutch Waterline and the Defence Line of Amsterdam, now known as Hollandse Waterlinies (UNESCO World Heritage Site).
At Fort Uitermeer sits Porterhouse Weesp, where you can settle down after a bike ride for coffee and cake, lunch or dinner. The walking route 'Rondje Naardermeer' also passes the fort. There is a small sloop harbour with 9 moorings for sloop boats and a special canoe landing stage. The sloop network 'Gooi, Vecht and Loosdrechtse Plassen' (node 46) is a special place to moor. At the fort sits Plofhuis, meeting location in a unique spot in the greenery. Adventurers can stay overnight on a raft from DRIJF.
