About Huis Doorn Museum
Huis Doorn Museum tells the story of the last German Emperor, Wilhelm II, and the Netherlands during the turbulent period surrounding the First World War. Following Germany’s defeat, Wilhelm II fled to the Netherlands in 1918. From 1920 until his death in 1941, he lived at Huis Doorn.

The interior décor originates from the palaces in Berlin and Potsdam. The furniture, paintings, uniforms and silverware show how Wilhelm II lived in exile. Many rooms are still furnished as he left them. As a result, it seems as though time has stood still in the house.

Huis Doorn was originally built in the fourteenth century as a moated castle and was converted into an elegant country estate at the end of the eighteenth century. The house is surrounded by a 35-hectare park, laid out in the English landscape style.

Walking through the park
The estate’s footpaths and gardens are open to the public all year round from 7.00 am to 7.00 pm. Stroll through the rose garden, past the woodcutter’s hut, and discover Wilhelm’s remarkable collection of conifers. The new park tour lets you learn more about the estate and its inhabitants as you walk. Children can search for hidden stories in the park during the family treasure hunt ‘The Emperor’s Secret ’. Huis Doorn also serves as a tourist information point. You can visit here to pick up the latest brochures about the region, as well as cycling and walking routes. Coming soon
From May 2027, the new exhibition building will open with a permanent exhibition on the turbulent period surrounding the two world wars. Personal stories illustrate how war, political unrest and major social changes affected everyday life.
