He was born Leendert Gestel in Woerden and developed into one of the important painters in the Netherlands the first half of the 20th century. After his death in 1941, attention for his work ebbed away somewhat but for about a decade there has been a reappraisal. Retrospective exhibitions are organised and publications on his work and life appear regularly. This led the Woerden Promotion Foundation to publicly and permanently present part of his work in reproductions in the town where he grew up.
