From Toeristisch Overstappunt (TOP) Beauforthuis in Austerlitz, you can explore the region on foot or by bike. Austerlitz is located on the Utrechtse Heuvelrug, the lateral moraine from the ice age that runs from the Grebbeberg to the Gooimeer. Austerlitz originated as an encampment of Napoleon's troops. On their departure, they left the Pyramid behind, as well as a poverty-stricken population. To combat poverty, Johannes Stoop founded an agricultural school in what is now the theatre cafe. He wanted to reclaim the heathland with sheep dung. This failed. Stoop's granddaughter Anna Aleida married Aernoud Jan de Beaufort, heir to the Den Treek estate in Leusden. They decided to switch to forestry. In 1861, they built behind the former school and church for Austerlitz, which was transformed into Beaufort House in 1989.
