Oudegein castle
Ridderhofstad Oudegein is one of the oldest castles of Jutphaas and of the entire Utrecht Nedersticht. Mr Lodewijck de Geer is the current resident.
Now located in Park Oudegein, the castle's history dates back to the 12th century when a tower was built on this spot to protect the trade of the city of Utrecht and the bishop from enemy attacks. In addition, a toll was levied there. The estate, which used to stretch from Hoogzandveld to Jutphaas, has been owned by the de Geer family since 1773. In 1973, a significant part of the land was sold to the then newly formed municipality of Nieuwegein. However, the part around the castle remained in the family's possession. To preserve the castle and estate for the future, the Oudegein Foundation was established in 1985.
