The Railway Museum is an experience for young and old. Located in the former Maliebaan railway station, this playful museum is within walking distance of the city centre. The museum has a large collection of historic trains; you will discover all about almost two centuries of train history.
History
The Railway Museum was founded in 1927, the time when it was realised that preserving old railway equipment is of great historical importance. The museum is located in the old Maliebaan station, a beautiful building that has been completely refurbished in the old style. So when you enter the building, you see old-fashioned chandeliers on the ceiling, beautiful antique 1st, 2nd and 3rd class waiting rooms and the old ticket offices where you can now buy your ticket to the museum.

Exhibitions
There are a number of different displays to admire in the museum. Why not start with ‘The Great Discovery’? A mine lift takes you back in time, to when the steam engine had yet to be invented. Pause here for a moment and admire the first Dutch steam locomotive, De Arend. On 17 September 2019, it was exactly 75 years since the Dutch government declared a railway strike among NS staff in London. In ‘Kinderen van Versteeg’, the Railway Museum displays its collection of posters, photographs, panels, medals and other small objects from the Second World War.
Continue your museum visit in ‘Dream Journeys’. There, you’ll come face to face with a dining car from what is perhaps the most famous train in the world: the Orient Express. You’ll also learn more about the heyday of international trains around 1900. ‘Stalen Monsters’ is a thrilling attraction where you’ll experience a heart-stopping rollercoaster ride past life-size trains and locomotives. In ‘The Trial by Fire’, you’ll be taken on a surprising and spectacular journey through nearly two centuries of railway history. In the Techlab, you’ll learn all about railway technology. Finally, in the main museum hall, you’ll find the crown jewels of the Dutch railways: the impressive steam locomotives and antique carriages bring bygone eras back to life.
