The Cunerakerk is Rhenen's main church. It is a relatively large church, created thanks to the fact that Rhenen was an important place of pilgrimage in the Middle Ages. Pilgrims descended on the relics of Saint Cunera, who was worshipped here from the eighth century onwards. The pride of the church is its 82-metre-high tower. A special feature of the interior is the beautiful Renaissance-style rood screen from around 1550.
It is one of the few preserved rood screens in the Netherlands. It is decorated with allegorical representations of the three main virtues faith, hope and love. Some of the figurative carvings have disappeared. In the choir are carved choir stalls from 1570.
Tours of the church are available all year round and you can climb the tower. You can book these tours through the VVV in Rhenen.
