Werk aan het Spoel

The sleekly designed fort Werk aan het Spoel near Culemborg is a cultural meeting place on the river Lek. Artists display their creations in a studio in the old fort watchman's house. Various cycling, walking and hiking routes cross near the Liniepont jetty. Cultural events are also organised. Visit the restaurant Caatje aan de Lek for a coffee or lunch.

A piece of history
In 1815, an inundation barrier sluice with an earthen battery was constructed in the Lekdijk near Goilberdingen. In 1848, the battery was improved into a fort. Later, the inundation system was optimised and the fort received four bombproof buildings. The dyke road ran right through the fort in peacetime, but was diverted in case of mobilisation. Seven concrete shelters and two machine gun casemates were built on the fort in 1939. South of the fort is a tall freestanding wall in a meadow. This 'bullet trap' is the remnant of a German firing range.
