The history of the Schoonrewoerd Reformed Church starts in the year 1888. People disagreed with the state of affairs in the Dutch Reformed Church and started looking for a place to hold separate religious services. Antonie Kool made his barn available for this purpose on Overheicop, it was then 1889.
The next step was to find building land, preferably in the centre of the village, to build a church of its own. A piece of land was purchased on Dorpsstraat for FL 3,650, at almost 90 cents per square metre. However, a big disappointment awaited. Mayor and Aldermen of Schoonrewoerd rejected the request to erect a church building. It was a disturbance of order; they spoke of nuisance and disorder. On appeal, B&W's decision was annulled. However, the church had to be as far away from the public road as the Dutch Reformed Church.
Construction of the church, a Neo-Romanesque hall church without a tower, started in 1890. The architect was R. Barneveld from Vreeswijk and the contractor G. Schouten from Vianen. The contract price was Fl. 13,980. The church was inaugurated on 27 January 1891 and is still in use today. As there was enough space on the site, a school with schoolhouse was also built. The school was discontinued in 2014 due to lack of pupils.
