Fort near Asperen
Location
Part of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie and with a Leerdam touch This beautiful tower fort is military heritage and part of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie. The Fort near Asperen can be visited during the summer months and is a work of art in itself. The dome, for example, which ensures that rainwater is held back, consists entirely of glass slates developed in the glassworks of the National Glass Museum. As many as 600 children from the neighbourhood were allowed to decorate their own tile.
The fort was built between 1845 and 1847. Surrounded by a moat that served as additional protection. Fort near Asperen was last readied for the upcoming war on 12 April 1940. However, the Germans flew their planes over the line. The fort (like many others) no longer had any military use.
The tower fort is closed from mid-October to mid-April due to wintering bats.
